“Two swift drum beats, then Speedy Ortiz don’t fuck around getting close up and dirty on the b-side to their forthcoming single, “Ka-Prow”, where singer Sadie Dupuis sings of bugs and beasts and roots crawling all over one another in a messy fight for vital resources; she shirks domestic responsibilities, quarrels with guilt, and confronts traitors in a gimlet-eyed, taunting tone that seems to say, “Just try me.” “Hexxy” and “Ka-Prow” are among Speedy Ortiz’s earliest-written songs, but they seem to have been hidden in reserve, providing an unexpectedly heavy gut-punch that doesn’t make concessions to jauntiness like their Sports EP did; the low rumble here (and on their forthcoming full-length) shares a lot of dank, ominous territory with Slint, the vocal attitude with the Breeders circa the Safari EP, and the chorus sounds like it could rip through asphalt without too much bother.”

Lots of Speedy news to catch up on…

- “Hexxy” premiered on Stereogum earlier today and they said nice things - “…now with their new single they’ve moved up to being one of the best and most exciting upcoming bands of 2013, period.”

- The single doesn’t come out until next Tuesday (4/30), but you can snag a copy at the record release show this Saturday.

- They signed to Carpark Records (Toro Y Moi, Cloud Nothings) for the release of their debut full length, Major Arcana, which is due out on 7/9.

If you think the tracks from the single are cool, then you have really good taste, congrats. Now start mentally preparing yourself for the 9th of July because you haven’t heard anything yet.

So, there’s a new Krill album - recorded by Julian & Carlos from Ava Luna - which you can pre-order in the form of a “USB drive embedded in a ball of mozzarella cheese.” We’re fairly certain that all music will be consumed this way in the future and might have to steal this idea moving fwd. In advance of Speedy Ortiz’s debut LP, the Northampton-based quartet is set to release their first-ever 7” via Inflated Records on April 30th. The forthcoming single highlights all of the elements that have garnered them praise, including dissonant, angular guitars, fill-laden drums and sneery vocals. ”Ka-Prow!” & “Hexxy” were two of the first Speedy Ortiz songs ever written and they were recently recorded with Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr., Chelsea Light Moving) at Sonelab Studios in Easthampton, MA.

Speedy Ortiz started playing shows in early 2012, although the project initially began in singer/guitarist Sadie Dupuis’ Western Mass living room. Sadie soon recruited friends Darl Ferm (bass), Mike Falcone (drums) and Matt Robidoux (guitar) to join the band, quickly finding themselves immersed in the burgeoning Boston basement and DIY scene. To support last summer’s Sports EP on Exploding in Sound Records, they spent two months touring the US and have since toured with the likes of Thurston Moore and Roomrunner.
